5 Piano Practice Tips to Help You Get Better

Practice makes a man perfect. You already know that. But did you know that a bad form of exercise will hamper your skill development? That’s why practicing good practice habits are so important. Similarly, your ability to improve on the piano increases multiplefold when you practice the right tips.

5 Piano Practice Tips to Help You Get Better 1

Before moving forward, you should understand that every person responds to practice differently. You will have to develop your style and rhythm, but piano practice basics always remain constant. It should be efficient, effective, and enjoyable. Also, what you might not know is that your practice’s quality is far more important than the amount of exercise.

While a piano instructor can guide you in many ways, practicing solo is more important. So here are tips that you can include in your piano practice to develop your playing skills –

Remove distractions

Even before sitting for the practice, the best thing you can do is to remove the distractions. Smartphones, tablets, TV, your neighbors – everything that can hinder your approach should be placed outside your practice zone. Even if all you get is 15 minutes for your daily practice session, make it count.

A 15-minute, distraction-free session is far more valuable than a 1 hour mixed bag attention span.

Take it Slow

Not just in piano practice but any form of skill practice, it is advisable to go slow and focus on what you are doing. Don’t sit down and start jamming. Play it at half-speed and then slowly begin speeding up. Slow down to whatever speed you can and play it perfectly.

It is a proven fact that our brains cannot focus on the instrument’s sound if played too quickly. Practice carefully and slowly, and avoid force speed.

Keep the Basics in Mind

When you start getting better at playing, your mind will force you to jump to the next step. But remember to master the basics. Learning the basics does not mean knowing the elementary skills. It means having full practical knowledge of the fundamentals.

It would help to have complete confidence in your knowledge of the basics. Without a clear foundation of the basic courses, you will not master the complex pieces.

Keep it Short

As we mentioned earlier, a 15-minute quality session is far better than a 1 hour of mediocre practice. You should realize your limits and confine your approach to them. If you have time and want to practice a complex piece, it’s best to do it in multiple sessions instead of letting it go in one sitting.

Keep the optimum time to 45-55 minutes at any time and take regular short breaks. The actual development of the physical practice happens when you are not doing it.

Listen to What You Play

You can immediately hear a difference in the way you play when you start listening. Pay close attention to the rhythm and tempo you choose. Could you focus on the piece and keep it slow? With time, you can play it without even looking at your fingers.
