Whether you are a business owner, an employee, or a consumer, there may come a time when you need to find the EIN of a company. This is an employer identification number used for tax purposes in a business with employees. It is sometimes referred to as the federal tax ID number. You may need this number when doing certain tax activities, such as filing your tax returns or other formal purposes involving the company. There are several ways that you can find this number.

If you work for the company, the EIN should be on any paystub you have received. This may be listed in the beginning part of the pay stub where your name and Social Security number. It is general labeled as the EIN but may not be labeled at all. It has nine digits, which are in this form: XX-XXXXXXX.
Do an Internet Search
You may also be able to search online to find an EIN. The company’s public records and other documentation made public may include this number. Make sure, though, that the source you find is valid because you may find fake numbers floating out there.
Contact the IRS
You can also do an IRS EIN lookup. Go to the IRS website or call the toll-free number to request an EIN of a company. Do note that this option is only available if you are an authorized person. This means that you are one of the following in the company:
- Corporate officer
- Owner
- Director
- Partner
If you do not hold one of these titles, the IRS will not provide you with the company’s EIN. You are better off using another method of getting the number if that is the case.
Another Option
If none of these options work for you, there may be additional ways to find this number. You should visit IRS EIN Tax ID Filing Service to learn more.
