How Do You Find a Company’s EIN?

Whether you are a business owner, an employee, or a consumer, there may come a time when you need to find the EIN of a company. This employer identification number is used for tax purposes in a business with employees. It is sometimes referred to as the federal tax ID number. You may need this number when doing certain tax activities, such as filing your tax returns or other formal purposes involving the company. There are several ways that you can find this number.

How Do You Find a Company's EIN? 1

Look At Your Paycheck

If you work for the company, the EIN should be on any pay stub you have received. This may be listed at the beginning of the pay stub where your name and Social Security number are. It is generally labeled as the EIN but may not be marked. It has nine digits, which are in this form: XX-XXXXXXX.

Do an Internet Search

You may also be able to search online to find an EIN. The company’s public records and other documentation made public may include this number. Ensure that the source you see is valid because fake numbers may be floating out there.

Contact the IRS

You can also do an IRS EIN lookup. Go to the IRS website or call the toll-free number to request an EIN of a company. Note that this option is only available if you are authorized. This means that you are one of the following in the company:

  • Corporate officer
  • Owner
  • Director
  • Partner

If you do not hold one of these titles, the IRS will not provide you with the company’s EIN. If that is the case, you are better off using another method of getting the number.

Another Option

If none of these options work for you, there may be additional ways to find this number. You should visit IRS EIN Tax ID Filing Service to learn more.
