Warren Buffett finally joins Twitter

Business tycoon Warren Buffett is well-known for his reluctance in investing in technology companies, but the technophobe now finally has a Twitter account. Buffett unveiled his @WarrenBuffett handle on Thursday during a speech.

The 82-year-old billionaire, also known as the Oracle of Omaha, joined the service and sent his first tweet on Thursday. “Warren is in the house,” it said and within a few hours, he had more than 32,000 followers. Three hours after his Twitter debut, Buffett tweeted a link to his essay on the role of women in America’s development. However, those are the only missives from the veteran investor since joining a day ago. At the time of writing this bit, he had over 270,000 followers.

Buffett has famously eschewed the use of computers and doesn’t have one in his office. His home PC is where he does his research and writing, besides playing bridge online. He has always resisted investing in technology companies because he says he can’t predict the future of those businesses the same way he can about insurance or manufacturing. Buffett said that even though he may not understand Twitter as well as some of the other celebrity tweeters, he knows it can’t be all bad because one of the company’s co-founders is from Nebraska, the US state where Buffet hails from

Buffett’s digital debut came during a live webcast hosted by Fortune magazine. Buffett will preside over Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting in Omaha this weekend, an event that draws more than 35,000 investors — many of whom typically tweet everything Buffett says over the course of the day. For once, Buffett too might be able to contribute to their virtual conversation.
