Should you upgrade? 5 Questions to ask Yourself Before Upgrading Your Phone

Consumers face a lot of pressure to keep up with rapidly evolving smartphones. Before you spend your money on a new device, ask yourself these questions. You may discover that you don’t need a new phone right now. Of course, you may also find that you need to upgrade your phone to take advantage of newer technology.

1. How Long Have You Had Your Current Phone?

If you have had your phone for two years or less, you almost certainly do not need a new one. Realistically, your phone should work well for two to three years. A three-year-old phone might not have the bells and whistles of a brand new one, but it can get the job done.


If your phone is more than three years old, it’s probably time to get a new one. After three years, the phone may have difficulty using the latest networks and running apps.

2. Can Your Phone Run the Apps You Need?

App designers know they face stiff competition. The app industry generates about $25 billion in sales, so designers include new features that will attract more customers. This usually means taking advantage of features included in the newest phones.


You don’t necessarily need to trash your old phone just because you can’t play the newest games on it. Consider whether you really need to update your apps to the latest versions. If you can continue using an old version that works on your phone, then you can probably delay upgrading to a new device.


If you absolutely must use certain apps that will not work on your old phone, then you clearly need to upgrade. This usually happens when people rely smartphone apps that help them run businesses or manage their lives. Of course, if you love playing the newest games, then you should follow your own priority by upgrading when you feel it’s necessary.

3. Does Your Phone Still Work Well?

Telecommunications companies want to offer their customers faster services. That’s great for people who have new phones, but it doesn’t always work well for older models. For instance, your old smartphone will continue receiving operating system updates for as long as you use it. Since those OS updates are designed to optimize newer phones, they can actually disrupt an old phone’s features.


In many cases, old phones simply do not have enough memory to store the OS updates. This can cause the phone to slow considerably. If you find that inconvenient or frustrating, then you probably need to upgrade.

4. Do You Need a Faster Internet Connection?

Smartphones have become popular because they give people mobile access to the Internet. You can download practically anything with a recently manufactured phone.


Old phones that can only connect to 3G networks, however, download information rather slowly, at least compared to the 4G phones that most people have. A 4G phone can download information five to 10 times faster than a 3G phone.

If you access the Internet and download files frequently, you could save a lot of time by upgrading to a 4G phone.

5. Is Your Contract About to Expire?

When most people buy cell phones, they sign contracts so they can get rebates that lower the purchase price of new devices.

If you have a contract that is about to expire, then now is a good time to start thinking about what new 4G phone you will get. It may take some research to decide which phone is right for you, so don’t wait until the contract has expired. It’s best to know what you want so you can move ahead when your contract ends. This should get you the best possible price on a new model.
