The Four Models of Smart Cars

If you are looking for top items for a car or a small car that gets great gas mileage, chances are you are considering one of the few from Smart Automobile. This is a German automotive company based in Böblingen, Germany. They specialize in microcars and subcompact cars. Most of their vehicles are sold overseas in Asia, Australia, and Europe, but some models have made their way to the United States. Here is the key information regarding the assorted styles.

Smart Cars

Smart Fortwo

When you envision a smart car, the smart Fortwo version is the model you are likely picturing. The smart Fortwo is a microcar introduced in Europe in 1998. Since then, it has been marketed in 46 countries, with over 1.7 million cars sold.

The smart Fortwo has a two-seater car that comes in at just 8.8 feet in overall length. The rear engine and rear-wheel drive are the secret to keeping the vehicle small.

The smart Fortwo is available in two distinctive styles. The Fortwo Coupe also called a city car in parts of Europe, features a hatchback instead of a traditional trunk. The Fortwo Cabrio has a convertible body style.

If you are looking for a tiny car that is one of the cars with the best mileage to fit yourself and only one other person, this car may work for you.

Smart Forfour

The smart Forfour is the only other smart car model currently sold in the United States.

The smart Forfour looks like the Fortwo but in an extended and slightly larger version. This model has four doors and features a rear seat for up to three additional people. As is the case with the Fortwo, the engine of this car is in the vehicle’s back.

The smart Forfour was first presented and sold in only Europe and Australia from 2004 to 2006. At the time, the car had a front engine. However, sales were lackluster, and the car was pulled. After an eight-year hiatus, the car was reintroduced in 2014 in its current form.

Smart Roadster

The smart Roadster was never available in the United States, and the odds of seeing one today, even in Europe, are rare.

This car was expected to be a game-changer in Europe. It was a two-seater sports car introduced in late 2003 in Europe. There were two models available; the Roadster and the Roadster Coupe. While sales expectations were initially met, the models’ production had to be halted in 2005 due to warranty claims.

The vehicle was expected to be reintroduced once these warranty claims were addressed, by global economic downturns halted that, and the car has not been manufactured or sold since.

Smart Formore

The smart Formore had the shortest run of all the smart cars made to date. This car only had a limited run and then was scrapped.

The smart Formore was the smart version of an all-wheel-drive SUV. It had five seats and four doors and was expected to share the same style as the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class SUV. Mercedes was helping with money to get this car off the ground.

Unfortunately, the timing never really worked out for this car. Production was halted in 2005 for two reasons. The smart brand had yet to turn a profit until now, so funds were already tight. Second, this vehicle cost more to make than originally thought. The rising costs and lack of money ultimately got this vehicle sidelined, and it has not been seen since.

To date, smart Automobile has manufactured four different models of cars. As the company grows and expands, more models may be added.
