Photogrammetry and Forensics Primer

This article is intended to introduce lawyers, accident Reconstructionists, and those who work in the insurance industries to photogrammetry and how it can be used in forensics. An improved understanding of this unacquainted measurement tool can often bring significant particulars to light that reinforce a case or converse the trial’s course in your favor. Photogrammetry is the science of taking geometric measurements from photographs.

“Photogram” is a photograph, and “metry” is the science of measuring. In the meantime, a picture takes images from the 3D world and projects them on a flat 2D image plane; we miss the depth information. On the other hand, photogrammetry can be seen as the procedure by which we do the contrary. By knowing some information about the camera that took the photographs and having two or more photos of the same object from a dissimilar viewpoint, we can improve 3D details. In some cases, it is likely to take measurements from a single image, but some criteria must be met.

The philosophies of photogrammetry date back more than a few hundred years. Contemporary-day photogrammetry is still an emerging science, and the majority of people are ignorant of what photogrammetry is and what it can do for them. Accordingly, many are not taking the benefit of capturing and preserving geometric data in their photos. Others are unaware they can extract 3D measurement data from their existing images.

There are different methods for a photogrammetry investigation based on the number and quality of photos. Each way has its compensations for incorrectness and straightforwardness and what can be output for visual presentation. In a properly documented scene for which photogrammetry has been taken into account. All details can be recreated in 3D, and the accuracy of measurements can be stated as being limited by the size of photos taken and how well the objects appear in the pictures. The majority of people who are responsible for taking photographs at accident or crime scenes don’t know that they could be capturing entire sets of 3D measurement data by simply adjusting their techniques to make their photos “photogrammetry friendly.”
