Google+ for Android gets a notification refresh

Google is rolling out an all-important update to its Google+ service on Android, which will bring massive improvements to its notifications system. With this update, your actions on the Google+ app will now reflect on the other devices you access the service from. The annoucement of this update was made by Google’s Vic Gundotra in a post on his Google+ profile.

Apart from the changes to the notifications the update will also include some cosmetic changes to the look of the Android version of the social network. Now, when you have read a notification on one of your devices, you can be assured that it will be marked as read by Google across all your other devices, including your desktop. Similarly, once you’ve dismissed a notification, it will stay dismissed for good.

The minor cosmetic change includes a new bell icon, in the Google bar and in mobile app, which will alert you about a notification. The updated notifications tray will now separate unread items from the read ones.

The other changes Google has effected are to the photo management and the social actions on app. It will now be possible for you to delete your pictures from the Photos view of the app. To know the number of +1s, comments and reshares your post has received, you will only need to tap on it now. Gundotra writes that, with this update, the app’s left-hand menu design has been made more consistent with other Google apps.

As with most updates these days, the updates will be rolled out to all users in a phased manner. Starting with Android, this update will eventually make its way to the web and iOS versions of Google+. You can keep an eye out for a notification informing you about the update or you can head on to the Google Play store to check it out.
