Dark Pigmentation on the Face Can Be Unattractive

Almost every single person has some issue with their appearance. Most of these issues are often concerned with the color and structure of the face. While some may think their skin color is too dark or too light, others may have problems with pigmentation in different parts of the skin. Bear in mind that there is no sure-shot way to change the color of your skin as it is something that you are biologically born with, as a result of genetics and the amount of melanin present in the skin cells.

The names of the cells that produce melanin are melanocytes. The more melanin in your skin, the darker your skin will be. The condition with too much melanin is known as hyperpigmentation and the converse is known as hypopigmentation. When there is an unequal distribution of melanin in the body, skin disorders are known as pigmentation disorders. One of the most common pigmentation disorders is melisma, which is caused by severe hormonal imbalances. This hormonal imbalance could be naturally present in the body or a result of a large dosage of birth control pills. This disorder results in dark blotches on the face and is most commonly seen in white women’s younger generations. This disorder is not something to excessively worry about, as it is seen to fade away with time.

Skin Pigmentation: Causes, Symptoms & Solutions | ClearSkinConversely, hormonal imbalances in dark-skinned people result in the formation of white or light-colored blotches. A severe form of this is known as vitiligo, and this is a life-long disorder that has no permanent cure as such.

There are less severe forms of skin disorders resulting from overexposure to the sun’s rays, which result in dark spots on the skin. These spots are known as “liver spots” or “age spots” and can be prevented by shielding the skin from the sun.

If you suffer from a skin pigmentation disorder, you may be able to address it by using creams and gels that you can buy from your skin pharmacy. Before you start using any of these products, however, make sure that you check the ingredients and seek a doctor’s opinion to ensure that you do not suffer from any adverse side effects. One ingredient that is carcinogenic and should be avoided is hydroquinone. On the other hand, a good ingredient seen to help with skin lightening is ‘alpha-arbutin.’

If you do not want to spend too much money on skin lightening creams, you can try natural alternatives like regularly exfoliating. This will flush out the components of your skin that create dark spots and will remove excessive pigmentation. Even if this does not result in permanent removal of the dark spots, it will definitely lighten the spots and give you clearer, smoother, and softer skin. If you have dehydrated skin, do not scrub your skin too much, as this can have its own adverse effects.

In more extreme cases, you might have to go in for laser surgery or for a process called microdermabrasion, in which they will break down the skin cells. But, these procedures are costly, and you will have to find a proper, professional surgeon who can help you.
