Calm Yourself During Road Rage


Texas has traffic. Texas has heat. These two things don’t make for the safest of driving conditions when it comes to road rage. Having defensive driving Texas techniques at the forefront on your mind can help you prevent accidents and avoid heart attacks. Chances are, you already know this, but the key is being aware. Our brains are set up to act on instinct. In predatory situations, this made sense: you can’t stop to think about how you’re going to fight off a rabid dog because that rabid dog wants to eat you right now. In driving, you need to make quick decisions under pressure too, but the key is distinguishing those times from all the other annoyances out on the road.

Being cut off, flipped off or just generally watching someone do something disrespectful on the road can be maddening. Your gut response may be for your heart to race and blood to boil. To change this behavior into something more constructive, you’ll need to be prepared to make a commitment. This won’t come easily and it likely won’t come quickly. You’re changing your brain’s wiring to start putting conditions on specific situations, and then processing them differently.

You can’t control their actions, but you can definitely control yours. Texas roads can be scary, especially since all the defensive driving tactics in the world can’t save you in every situation, but living in fear won’t help you either. Instead, you need to be prepared to act in such a way that will minimize the chance of having a risky encounter on the road.

You probably already know if you’re an aggressive driver. If you’re yelling or talking about other drivers (even when they can’t hear you) or tailgating slow people who stay in the left lane then that’s a good sign you’re having trouble with road rage. Flashing lights and honking excessively is certainly another symptom, but even seething with your knuckles clenched can be toxic for everyone on the road. If you don’t change your behavior for other drivers, then do it for you and your impending stroke chances.

It sounds simplistic, but breathing is one of the best ways to combat road rage. You’re upset that there’s no efficiency on the road and that traffic is being caused by those who aren’t capable drivers. You can’t do anything about it, and understandably that can make you upset. However, when you’re already in that situation, pay attention to what you do have control over: your actions. We don’t remember this because it feels so instinctual to become angry, but you can change. Start exercising breathing tactics and focusing on them when you can’t see straight. Inhale through your nose to the count of four, hold for the count of 7 and exhale through your mouth to the count of 8. There are a million variations of this, and you can find one that works for you. If you’re listening to angry or emotional music, then stop doing it during high tense situations. Thumping bass in ears won’t make you feel any more calm. Save those tunes for open roads and clear conditions.

A lot of these road rage problems can be solved before you even get into the car.  Getting enough sleep is obviously important for all of your mental faculties, and you might be surprised at how much of a difference it can make. Also, a lot of this is just about planning ahead. Constantly exposing yourself to these upsetting situations every day isn’t going to help you, and some people have these gut reactions built in so deep as to make progress exceptionally slow. So slow in fact that you’ll be 80 before you see any real improvement. So in the meantime, you need to find ways to get around it. The more cars on the road, the more chances you’ll have a road rage incident. So start leaving earlier, later or not at all. Route out the traffic and start learning the roads. Don’t put yourself in situations that will endanger you and others.
