What is Aspect ratio?

Aspect ratio is the ratio of the width of an image to the height of the image. This ratio differs for different images based on where it is used like in a computer, photography, television and so on. In case one needs to change the ratio, it needs to be done appropriately from both the height as well as the width. Changing just one side of the image ratio may distort the images. An image or a film is made with an original aspect ratio and this gets. This ratio is then altered or converted into different sizes for it to fit in different screens. However, make sure that you compare mobiles and only after you are satisfied, you can opt for the one that suits your needs perfectly.


Aspect ratio is important when you need to resize an image or a video. It needs to be done as per the ratio so as to prevent and disfigurement. Its importance can also come into consideration when buying anything that has a screen like a TV, computer, laptop etc. The most commonly used ratio these days for HD TV’s or videos is 16:9.

In short the proportion should always be maintained between the width and height of an image or video which will mostly be in rectangular form as they have a horizontal orientation.

What is a resolution:

The resolution of an image is the total number of pixels the image has and gets displayed on your computer, laptop, mobile screen or television. The higher the resolution, the higher is the quality of the image.

There are different types of resolution in a digital image which can be described as pixel resolution, spatial resolution or spectral resolution.

? Pixel resolution is defined as the number of pixels used in the digital image.

? Spatial resolution refers to how the columns and rows in an image can be resolved in an image. So this also depends on It not only depends on the system that was used to create a particular image.

? Spectral resolution refers to the resolution of different color used in a colored image.


An image’s resolution mostly comes into consideration while printing the image and mostly when the image has a lot of graphics. A lot of small dots that come together, form an image. So the higher the resolution, the sharper and crisp the image will be. The most common display resolution used are 720p, 1080p and 1080i. A low resolution will degrade an image and a higher pixel count results in a reasonably sharp display


An image is made up of very small dots that come together to make a perfect image. So both the aspect ratio and the resolution need to go hand in hand to give a perfect image. To give an example, today is the HD era, for a HD video the common pixel resolutions are 1440×1080 or 1920×1080. For 1440×1080 will have a frame of 4:3 aspect ratio and 1920×1080 equals to a frame aspect ratio of 16:9 which is mostly used today for good quality screens.
