There is a lot that goes into determining if you are a dog person or a cat person, unless you specifically dislike one or the other and know you’d never own them. Some people, however, like both, but identify more with one than the other.
Maybe you are simply more laid back, and enjoy your sleep, and like a pet that doesn’t always want your undivided attention. This would make you a cat person. If you are energetic and like a pet that continually is in your face and following you around, you may be a dog person.
Do You Have What It Takes To Raise A Healthy Dog?
Dogs take a lot of work. They need grooming, regular vet visits, the right food, vaccinations, and more. They need their teeth brushed. They need daily attention, which can include a morning walk, a refilled food dish, and even skunk baths.
In order to have a happy dog you need to make sure they are a healthy dog. When they aren’t healthy you need to do what you can to get them healthy again, and sometimes that isn’t cheap at all.
Are You Home More Often Than You’re Away?
To be a dog person you need to have plenty of time to dedicate to your dog. If you’re barely ever home and you aren’t going places where you can take your dog with you, then you probably shouldn’t have a dog. They need to go outside to use the bathroom, they need to be fed when it’s time to eat or they may eat too much.
Do You Have A Lot Of Love And Affection?
While you’re spending all of this time at home with your dog you need to be paying attention to them too. They will try to get your attention often, so you need to have the patience to deal with them being in your face, even when you’re trying to get stuff done at home.
Cuddle with your dog, take them for walks (they need plenty of exercise), play fetch with them, and show them your love with dog specific treats and things to keep them entertained.
Can You Afford A Dog?
One of the of the most important thing that determines if a dog is right for you is whether or not you can afford one. With a cat you are guaranteed a smaller animal that doesn’t eat a ton of food, doesn’t need a lot of extra toys and gear for spending time outdoors, and may even need a little less vet care.
Dogs need a lot of stuff, and the bigger the dog the more you’ll spend on things like food. Can your budget handle you being a dog person?
