5 Tips To A Lucrative Web Design Career

Studying web design appeals to people who have a creative streak. Some people who dabble in web design do it for the fun of resolving technical problems. Many people work on their own projects or to help someone out. Some people do it for extra money.

If you enjoy building websites, consider a career in web design.

On one hand, it is not easy. There are many good designers. You will have to compete with them for clients.  On the other hand, there is no reason, you can’t join their ranks.

So what does it take to be a good designer? It takes confidence to believe that you can do it. It takes education. And it takes practice, practice, and more practice.

If you believe you are ready for a fun, well-paying career, here are five tips to get started.

Tip #1: Education

Web design is complex. There is a lot to learn. You have to get good at using technical tools and techniques. You have to develop an eye for design. And you have to learn how to promote your work.

Once you make your decision, you can take one of three routes:

  1. Do it yourself.
  2. Find a mentor.
  3. Join a school.

Out of these three routes, the third is your best option. You will get expert help, go through a structured learning process, and be exposed to cutting edge information. In addition, you will  develop new friends in the business, belong to a community of designers, and be pushed to reach excellence. Finally, you will be able to build up your portfolio from student assignments, meet prospective employers, and you will earn a degree for web design.

This is not to say that routes 1 and 2 do not work. They are just much harder.

If you do it yourself, will you be following a structured learning plan? If you can’t come up with a good curriculum, there will be holes in your understanding.


Finding an experienced web designer to teach you would be wonderful, chances of finding someone with enough time and patience to  you everything he or she knows is a matter of luck.

Tip #2: Exposure

Now that you have decided to become a web designer, you should learn  good web design looks like.

Join online forums, favorite top designers websites, and even attend  conferences if you can. Your exposure to people who love to do what  are learning how to do will make a huge difference in your life.

Collect samples of outstanding websites. Find out how web designers create them. What software do they use? What techniques do they deploy? Often, you might be able to write to them and ask for their advice. Many top  designers are only too happy to share their knowledge with  interested in their work.

Tip #3: Familiarization

You must become familiar with the best tools in your. For instance, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or Fireworks. You must also become familiar with the language of your business. For instance, HTML, CSS, PHP, ASP, and Javascript.

Tip #4: Study and Practice

You must acquire as much hands on practice as you can. This means setting up test websites to try out different ideas.  Theory is wonderful, but unless you have lots of practice, you will never fully understand what goes into making an outstanding website.

When thinking about your career, don’t just focus on technical skills. You must also get very good at marketing. If you are looking to start your own career right away, then learn how to promote your  knowledge and skills. If you start early enough, you will have plenty of time to gather all the materials you need to impress a future employer or client. Show them that you know what it takes to be a good web designer.
