This is not to say that routes 1 and 2 do not work. They are just much harder.

Collect samples of outstanding websites. Find out how web designers create them. What software do they use? What techniques do they deploy? Often, you might be able to write to them and ask for their advice. Many top designers are only too happy to share their knowledge with interested in their work.
