Yahoo! kills off classic mail
Say goodbye to the “classic” interface of Yahoo! mail. Starting today, the mail service will not let you access the older interface in your inboxes anymore. The redesigned inbox unveiled by Yahoo! in December will now be made available in all user inboxes.
Your new Yahoo! inbox
This said, your communications will still be scanned. In the help section of its website, Yahoo! says that in case you do not wish to go ahead with using the new Yahoo! mail, you have a couple of options. You can download your mail using IMAP and access them through a different program like Outlook, Mac Mail or your mobile device’s application. Even then, you will have to accept Yahoo’s Communications Terms of Services. Yahoo! also gives you another option in case you do not take a liking to the new mail – close your account. Yes, Yahoo! actually suggests you shut your account down if you do not want to use the new mail. Considering the dwindling number of Yahoo! Mail users these days, we wonder if the company can actually afford to ask its patrons to shut their accounts.
Yahoo! also wrote that Premium Mail Plus users who want to cancel their accounts because of non-availability of the classic mail are welcome to do so. You will be eligible for a prorated refund of the unused portion of the service.
The redesigned mail client was introduced back in December last year. It features a cleaner, neater interface that is common to the web and mobile versions of Yahoo! mail. The decision to scan and analyse user mails by the company has not gone down well with users, and the gruff way in which Yahoo! is making the new design mandatory is bound to cause more grumbling. However, Yahoo! isn’t the only company that scans and analyses mail, Gmail has been doing this for a long time now.
