Wammy Passion Z

Wicked Leak has finally launched  its latest flagship Android smartphone, the Wammy Passion Z. The phone is sleek, slim and boasts of a lot of features under its hood. We did fall in love with its design, firm shell and the full HD LCD IPS display. It looks like they are the first to release a budget quad core smartphone with a full HD display in the Indian Market. Let’s check out what more it has to offer.

Design and Build

At first glance the Wammy Passion Z  looks a lot like the Sony Xperia S except for the missing light bar at the bottom. The overall build is firm and carries a strong frame with a dual–tone white and black exterior. The front is a completely glossy black glass while the sides and rear are matte-finished in white.

The front panel (glass) is made of OGS (One Glass Solution) which makes the phone a little slimmer than other conventional handsets. The OGS display technology eliminates the gap between the LCD display and the touchscreen by integrating the front sensor glass and the sensor substrate into one single piece of glass itself. This reduces cost as well as helps make the phone slimmer than before. The bottom of the glass has three backlit capacitive buttons for home, back and menu. Sadly, we found the menu button more brightly lit than the other two buttons. But we pass that off as a manufacturing defect for now as the piece we received was an initial factory piece. The upper portion of the display sports the earpiece, camera, notification LED and the necessary sensors beneath it.

The volume rocker and power button are seen on either sides of the phone while the top sports the 3.5-mm audio jack and the bottom has the micro USB interface. The rear panel features the main camera with an LED flash and a speaker grille. Beneath the rear panel is the battery and the micro SD card slot. The phone is a dual SIM handset featuring one SIM as a regular mini SIM and the other as a micro SIM. This is one of the first handsets we have come across to feature both SIM card sizes. In a way it is beneficial for the masses as the user can use either size SIM card he or she already has. The phone measures 8.9 mm in thickness and weighs 150g. The slim form factor gives the phone a good grip.

The Wammy Passion Z is built using the MT6589 chipset featuring a quad core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and a PowerVR SGX544MP graphics unit. The internal memory provided is 1 GB of RAM while the storage capacity stands at 4 GB in total. The screen is a large 5-incher featuring a full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The display is an IPS panel with OGS technology, which helps make the handset thinner by a good margin. The Passion Z is a dual SIM handset which can be used in combinations of WCDMA + GSM or GSM + GSM. Connectivity options are Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth and a  micro USB PC interface. The rear shooter is a 12 megapixel camera with a BSI sensor and an LED flash while the front camera is a  2 megapixel. Sensors available inside the unit are gravity, proximity, light, magnetic and gyro sensors. Lastly, the battery powering the Passion Z is a 2500 mAh. The handset is available in two colour variants—all black and black and white combo. The Passion Z runs on the latest Android Jelly Bean version 4.2.1.

User interface and Performance

The Passion Z runs on the stock Android Jelly Bean V4.2.1 operating with a stock user interface and launcher. The user interface is very smooth and we did not face any lags or sluggish moves whatsoever. Apps installed are almost none apart from those that come along with the operating system. What we only found extra was a file manager which can get you started by installing apps directly from the SD card instead of the Play Store.

As usual, tests were carried out on the Passion Z using the standard benchmarking apps. AnTuTu gave us a score of 11597, Quadrant scored 3952 and Nenamark2 scored 21.8 fps. Linpack gave results of 37.6 MFLOPS and 125.1 MFLOPS respectively. Going with the scores we obtained, the Passion Z performs at par with most budget quad core processor-based handsets we have reviewed so far.

Display and media

The display features a full HD 1080p resolution and has very crisp and clear picture quality. Video and photos look bright as the contrast and brightness levels are well adjusted. Viewing angles are great, thanks to the IPS display panel incorporated. The display features the OGS technology within, but the end-user would not know the difference at all. Watching 720p and full HD 1080p videos will give you a rich experience and the entertainment is very pleasurable. This handset is one of the first ones to be released with a full HD display in India.

System information from Antutu

The Passion Z handles a fair amount of media formats by default. These include AVI, MP4, FLV, 3GP, MOV, ASF, MPEG, RMVB, H.263, H.264 MP3, AAC and WAV. Other formats apart from the ones listed are not compatible, but if you have videos encoded with other codecs, you can play them with ease using third party media players such as MX Player, Mobo Player and a few other well known ones.

Outdoor shoots are above average

The 12 MP camera featured here performs slightly above average as compared to regular budget phones. Photos taken in broad daylight are very good, but certain areas are washed out if they are not in the main focus. By default, the metering of the images are in the center due to which the surrounding images get washed out. You have to touch the screen to focus the area you need. Indoor shots are pleasant and good too. No complaints of the camera from our side.

The 2500 mAh battery powering the handset seems to be fairly good for the handset. The uptime we clocked in our tests was a decent 8 hours and 30 minutes when used for videos, music, calls and streaming videos throughout the day. Standard usage would help the battery last even longer and we assume at least around 12 hours in total if not more. Using apps such as memory cleaners, app killers and a few others can help prolong the battery. But finally, it all boils down to the way you use it.

Verdict and Price in India

Being one of the first full HD handset powered by a quad core processor and running the latest Android operating system the Wammy Passion Z seems to be a steal priced at Rs 14,990. We definitely recommend this model to those seeking a decently performing handset with a crisp and clear display. There is a hint of news that IOcean X7 is a similar looking model featuring almost similar hardware (except for an 8 MP camera and a 2000 mAh battery to be specific) will shortly be visible in the Indian market and will be priced at Rs 12,000 approximately. We are not sure of the manufacturer’s details, the after sales service and final price as yet. Micromax, Spice, Karbon and the rest are yet to announce something in a similar range. Till then, the Wammy Passion Z from Wicked Leak will still be flying high in the budget sector.
