Psychology of Internet Web Design

web design img1 Psychology of Internet Web DesignThe story of the small time niche business gone huge on behalf of media exposure is no shocker in today’s day and age. More and more, stories continue to emerge of companies barely scraping by that suddenly find themselves servicing a market they didn’t even know existed. In the modern context, niche sometimes simply means hidden, and the art of web design plays an integral part in companies emerging from the depths.

Of course, exposure itself is not enough to bring a company from bust to blush. The difference between a well done website and one with boxed fonts, cluttered information, and long texts that not even the most interested internet-surfer would touch with a ten foot pole, is enormous. Format is everything. User friendliness is key. To leave that wandering naïve who stumbles upon your website uncaptivated, unengaged, and uninterested, is to sign your own death warrant.

You may feel you have something to offer, something to say, something worth sharing with the world. Your first step is to build a website for free, utilizing one of the various online companies designed to help you do just that. Once you have your site, you must figure out how to get your information across without being boring. You need to engage your reader in such a way that is informative and professional, yet also playful and stimulating. Furthermore, you must organize your website so that the reader sees what you want them to see.

There is no oneway to get your desired result in website design, but there are certainly a couple things that should be kept in mind while trying. Website design is more of an art than a formulaic endeavor. It takes perseverance and a keen eye for detail. You must take the timeto get it right, or else be prepared to pay someone to do it for you. Whatever the case may be, always remember that the website is your company’s public face to the world. Those who believe otherwise are usually the ones who cannot understand why their business fails to grow. The power of research speaks for itself.

Cialdini’s Rules of Influence

There is no one formula for making sales or for driving the media exposure you want. However, Robert B. Cialdini, Regents’ Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Marketing at Arizona State University, has outlined rules that serve as a great starting place for understanding the psychology of sales. Humans do all sorts of crazy things, but their behavior can also be understood in logical terms. Reading Cialdini’s work will provide insight into what you should be striving to achieve when you design a website. Even if it doesn’t, you might learn to understand yourself a little better. Cialdini’s principles can be found at Mindtools.com under the name “Six Principles of Influence.”

Stand Behind What You Present

Sometimes, during the creative process, it is easy to get so caught up in pleasing others that you forget what you like yourself. You may forget to ask yourself how you would feel if you were in the opposite position. Decide if you would be attracted to the concepts you’re putting forth. Ask if you would continue reading, if you were the customer. Web design is all about asking those questions, because if you don’t stand behind your design, you cannot expect others to show interest, either. This can be detrimental to your work. Any artist will tell you that creative work must come from the heart. If your work can’t even convince you, then it won’t be able to convince anyone else.
