Indians may soon be able to access Google, YouTube faster

It’s not even been two days and 2013 is already looking better. According to a report by The Times of India, Google will make its data centre in Asia operational this year,  which means YouTube videos will load faster for us Indians and searches will be quicker by almost 30 percent.

Google started work on its Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong centres in 2011. While the one in Singapore is likely to be completed early this year, the Taiwan one is scheduled to start operations by the second half. As for the Hong Kong facility, Google has not provided a clear timeline on its completion. Reportedly, the company is spending $300 million (Rs 1,600 crore) on its centres.

Lalitesh Katragadda, Country Head, India Products at Google, was quoted as saying, “Internet connectivity speed in India is not very high. These data centres will be crucial to this market due to its proximity.”

 Google Asia data centres

The search giant set out to look for locations in Asia for its data centres in 2007, and visited locations in Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, India and Vietnam. Katragadda cited the country’s weather conditions as a reason for it not being chosen as a location for data centres.

In spite of not having a data centre in India, this points towards Google increasing its focus on the market. The report even quoted Katragadda as saying, “More people from India are coming online every day and this is an important market as Google looks to bring the next one billion online. We plan to invest disproportionately in India in the coming months and years.”

Indeed, there are more people online every day, and the quality and speed of Internet connections is also increasing, although the pace is slower than we’d like to think. Akamai’s Q1 2012 State of the Internet report ranked India 112th based on the average broadband speed in the country. The report revealed that the speed of broadband connections worldwide is now at 2.6Mbps, a 25 percent rise over the same quarter last year. According to the report, South Korea was at the top with an average connection speed of 15.7Mbps. Japan came second with the average connection speed being 10.8Mbps, followed by Hong Kong (9.3Mbps), the Netherlands and Latvia (both at 8.8Mbps), Switzerland (8.1Mbps), Ireland (7.3Mbps), the Czech Republic and Belgium (both 7.1Mbps), and Finland (6.9Mbps).  The U.S. ranked 12th at 6.7Mbps.

However, Katragadda went on to state that some of Google’s popular services like YouTube or the Hangouts feature on Google+ cannot be enjoyed at the current speeds prevalent in the country. He hopes now that with data centres coming closer, the time taken will “reduce drastically.”
