Gmail gets a brand new inbox on desktop and mobile
Google has rolled out a fresh new update for its Gmail desktop and mobile users. The update promises that it will let users control their inboxes and not the other way around. The ‘brand new inbox’ that Google is offering with this update is particularly interesting for users who have inboxes full of emails from friends, social notifications, deals and offers, confirmations, and so on, and don’t see a way to organise it better.
The new Gmail inbox on mobile devices
For those using Gmail on the desktop, the new inbox will divide your emails into categories that will show up as different tabs. Users can simply pick the categories they want. An inbox organised thus, lets users see their latest emails at a glance and also decide when to read it. The new inbox can be customised too. Users can select the tabs they want from all five to none, drag-and-drop to move messages between tabs and even set certain senders to always show up in a particular tab. They can also ‘star’ messages, so they appear in the Primary tab.
For the ones using Gmail on their mobile devices (Gmail for Android 4.0+ and Gmail app for iPhone and iPad), the Primary email will show up when they launch the app. They can also move to other tabs, if they choose to.
Additionally, users can even opt to switch off all optional tabs and return to the classic view, or to any of their other favourite inbox types.
Tabs to organise emails better
You may not see the new inbox rightaway, as Google is rolling it out gradually. The desktop, Android and iOS versions will become available within the next few weeks. Those interested in trying out the new inbox on desktop sooner, should keep an eye on the gear menu and select “Configure inbox” when it appears in the Settings options.
