The more you use Facebook, the more miserable

I have always found people from the University of Michigan to be rather full of themselves and devoid of wit and dress sense.

I don’t pretend for a moment that this discovery holds any universal truth. I might have encountered only two or three of these people at the most.

However, I wonder how you will respond to a piece of research from that same university that suggests Facebook and happiness may be virtual opposites.

I am miserably indebted to CBS Philadelphia for noticing this study and its implications.

The study has a portentous title: “Facebook Use Predicts Declines in Subjective Well-Being in Young Adults.”

It offers some even more portentous sentences. For example: “The more people used Facebook at one time point, the worse they felt the next time we text-messaged them; the more they used Facebook over two weeks, the more their life satisfaction levels declined over time.”

This study was performed among 82 young adults, whose emotions are, surely, as consistent as the British weather.

Still, these researchers believe that their methods offered a disturbing indicator.

Here’s another sentence that strikes fiercely into the caring world of sharing: “On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection. Rather than enhancing well-being, however, these findings suggest that Facebook may undermine it.”

Amateur psychologists — I believe they’re called life coaches these days — will say that those who used Facebook for long periods are seeking some sort of relief from misery in the first place.

When they see that everyone else is having far more fun than they are, they get even more miserable.

The researchers resisted this hypothesis. They saw no evidence that people turned to Facebook as a pick-me-up. (Young adults normally turn to beer or drugs, don’t they?)

As with so much (all) research, it would take a much larger sample to see if these results could be replicated and, ultimately, understood.

One hypothesis, though, immediately comes to mind: Somewhere deep inside, people on Facebook wish they were doing something more enjoyable. Yes, even with someone else.

Indeed, one observation here was that those who had regularly seen people during the study — you know, in real life — experienced greater misery from prolonged Facebook use.

Kids, your parents will always tell you that money doesn’t make you happy. It seems that Facebook won’t make you happy either.

  2. So at the beginning of this season, within my college wellness class I met that one girl. I observed she checked out me and smiled at us a lot as well as when I wasn’t searching at her my buddies stated she was searching at me as well as in my direction a great deal. Well I spoken to her, we grew to become buddies, she added me on facebook and provided her number. We’d talk frequently about all kinds of things and that i observed that even if I had been alone within the library she’d come towards my direction and speak with me and start a discussion about several things.

Well I wound up believing that she may be into me and lots of my buddies explained to request her out striking on her behalf and stuff. Two days ago I saw her in the library, hugged her and kissed her around the cheekbones. Well a next day of which i walked as much as her while she was studying, spoken to her for a short time, and that i put my hands on her behalf neck, like the rear of my hands touched her neck, no getting or anything after which I sorta tickled her. She stated “hey you’re touchy!”.

Well, ten minutes later I recieve a note on my small facebook from her “boyfriend” (essentially some guy who’s her friend now who she split up having a semester ago, everybody is aware of this). He stated things i did was wrong and creepy and she or he later explained this too.

Factor is, she helped me to be considered a stalker and slip. Now I had been told to remove her from my facebook and that i did. I erased her like a friend on facebook and removed her like a contact on my small mobile phone.

Today I saw her in the library again today. As she was walking by she looked within my direction but did not do anything whatsoever.

I would like to have this girl from my thoughts. Issue is she is among the couple of decent women inside my local college. Women my home don’t really look exceptional whatsoever to ensure that is how the issue is available in and she or he was the very first girl I ever fell deeply in love with. I’m 18 and she or he is much like 21.

I actually want to get her from my thoughts, completely, how do i best do that?

  3. I’ll never join another social media site again. Just the idea of seeing individuals statuses and photos regarding their happy lives makes many people miserable regarding their own lives. I believe which i was really doing better after i disabled my account, so when I returned on again, all I saw were photos of people that no more know I exist, and so i permanently erased my account.

I additionally read research how facebook can also be making people more miserable too, but many people have different reasons. Does other people have the same or no?
