Design Tips to Optimise your Website for Mobile Users

The average consumer uses their mobile phone for far more than just texting. We use our smartphones as a source of information, accessing websites on the go. Whether you have a personal blog or business website, you’ll want to think about how to make sure that it translates well to the small screen of a smartphone. Not only is the screen smaller, but connection times are usually slower. This can impact your website’s navigation and load time, creating a slow and confusing user experience. As a result, providing an engaging mobile experience is expected to be the wave of the future in web design. At the moment, you can get started by keeping the following tips in mind.

Streamline and Simplify Content

If you’ve worked hard on creating a full-colour website with all the latest bells and whistles, it will be hard to cut out any of this. However, when optimising a site for mobile devices it’s best to keep your content as simple as possible. You have restricted screen space, which means you need to only provide information that a customer is most likely to look for.  Use a keyword research tutorial to find the most important phrases to include, so that every word serves a purpose. If you’re selling products, you’ll need to pay special attention to this and minimise the steps needed to go from landing page to checkout.

Avoid Flash and Pop-Ups

One major reason to avoid using Flash is that Apple products simply do not support them. If your website uses Flash, you’ll automatically alienate anyone who uses an iPhone. Java is another program that isn’t supported by a high percentage of smartphones, and should similarly be avoided. If you have pop-up ads on your regular website, these should be cut out for your mobile site as well. They can cause the page to stop loading or create unnecessarily slow loading times which will cause your audience to simply close the browser.

Pay Attention to Colour Contrast

Whether you hire a professional for New York or San Francisco web design, no matter what the local trends might be colour is one of the most important facets a designer will work with. A good designer will find the colour palette to best represent your brand, but on a smartphone it’s also important to think about contrast and eye strain. A simple two-colour contrast of a dark and light colour tends to work best on any device.

Optimise Font Size

Although today’s mobile devices feature larger screens than in the past, it’s still important to make your fonts large enough that they are easy to read. It’s better to provide fewer words at a larger size than large volumes of small text to scroll through.

Test for Navigation

The average smartphone user is in a hurry and wants to access information on the go. To keep your visitors happy, you’ll want to be sure that they can easily navigate your website and find pertinent information. Make sure that the most important facts are clearly marked and that all your links work before you publish your website. It can also be helpful to ask your friends and family to test the site and offer feedback before making it go live.

Finally, if you’ve created a pared-down version of your original site for smartphones you’ll want to give your visitors the option of visiting the original version. Be sure to include links not only to social media profiles, but also to your main website.
